The English Language and Cultural Opportunities (ELCO) programme equips people interested in Christian mission with effective English language communication skills. They have a range of English classes, mission training sessions and opportunities to experience British cultural diversity. ELCO is aimed at those people who sense a call from God to engage in missions. On successful completion of the
programme you will be able to communicate in English for everyday life, on an international English speaking mission team and tell other people the good news about Jesus. You will be part of a group of English students from around the world, learning about English and mission for about 20 hours over 5 days a week. Lessons are taught at Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate levels by well qualified English language teachers. Small class sizes allow lots of personal help from teachers. Other sessions are taught by people experienced in mission and ministry. Our teachers will help you improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, also developing your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. When you finish the programme you will be much more confident and capable of communicating in English. You will have many opportunities to talk in English to local people and experience community activities in daily life and as you attend local churches.

This is a training programme in a mission context specifically for those interested in joining Christian mission or already planning to join OM
or another mission agency. We are not a Christian language school. Before being accepted on ELCO you will be tested to check that you have a basic understanding of English and can have a simple conversation. If you cannot speak basic English the classes will be too difficult for you to understand. We cannot take beginners.
You will live at our OM training and ministry centre in the town of Halesowen, near Birmingham, the UK's dynamic second largest city. You will sleep in shared bedrooms on bunk beds.
From Mondays to Fridays your meals will be cooked by OM staff. Special dietary needs must be communicated before you arrive. On Saturdays and Sundays you will need to buy and cook your own food. The cost of all food is included in the course fees. We need to know in advance of any special dietary needs (vegetarian, dairy-free, food allergies, gluten free, etc.)
You need to travel to Birmingham in the UK. The nearest airport is Birmingham International Airport (BHX). If no good flights can be found to Birmingham, other possible Airports are London or Manchester. There are good train and bus connections from these Airports to Birmingham.
Please See "Travel".
Participants should be in average good health and able to walk a reasonable distance without difficulty. If you think this requirement rules you out, talk to us and we will see what adjustments we may be able to make for you. Each participant is responsible to obtain appropriate emergency health and medical insurance.
Nationals from the EU and EEA do not require a visa for the UK. For all other nationalities you will either require an invitation letter in order to apply for a visa before
leaving your country or just an invitation letter to present at the airport on arrival in the UK. In both cases you will enter the UK as a Short Term Student.
