Day of Celebration: First Dalit Children Graduate
February 28, 2009, will stand out in the history of OM India as a true moment of triumph as its Dalit Education Centers celebrated their first-ever graduation service.

With blue satin caps and gowns, 17 adolescent boys and girls stood with beaming faces as a large crowd of people applauded their accomplishment in completing a full course in basic education in the English language. Two other schools sent their graduates via video, giving testimonies of thanks and a hopeful future. In all, nearly 50 children emerged as successful graduates.

Many of these children never stood a chance for a new future until the Dalit Education Centers (DECs) began. They were condemned to a life of severe poverty and oppression like the generations before them because Indian society and the caste system labeled them as outcasts.

However, the DECs have changed all of that for them. These young boys and girls have been empowered to now pursue careers as doctors, engineers and teachers.

Currently, there are 82 DECs with 13,500 Dalit children. At each of these centers, students are being provided with high-quality English-language education, so they break free from centuries-old illiteracy and poverty and begin a new future. The DECs also engage in holistic community development activities including medical care and economic development initiatives. These offer entire Dalit communities opportunities for social growth and welfare. Many Dalit families have benefitted from these programs and enjoy the emancipation they now have.

Transformed from Within
OM's work in India represents our largest single ministry field with over 2,500 full-time, Indian workers. We are dedicated to training and equipping Indian Christian workers as instruments to lead people to the living God and help them grow in their faith.

OM has focused on reaching out to India’s poorest community, the 300 million Dalit people, “the untouchables.” Despised, oppressed and hated by their own countrymen, the Dalit people are searching for hope. Sensing that God is doing a new thing, OM India has had teams across the nation focus on transforming lives in Dalit communities. Since 2003, these teams have witnessed an amazing move of God’s Spirit resulting in numerous local fellowships.

Testimonies from India

“Nobody imagined how quickly God’s Word would spread across the state bringing many people who belonged to different faiths to learn about God. OM India leadership and GSCC pastors were left spellbound by the awesome power and all-pervasive work of the living God.”

“Today the groups in this particular region have matured into churches with 25-50 members or more, gathering every week for worship and instruction. Most of the new believers have experienced God in extraordinary ways. They have seen miraculous healings and answers to prayer, release from spiritual oppression, and restoration of peace and joy in their homes.”

“After the meeting, 45 people made a public proclamation of their faith by being baptized.”

OM India leaders, amazed at what God is doing, at a recent gathering of 1,000 new believers from 25 villages, who came together to celebrate Jesus.
